You know they're capable...

so why does school feel so hard?

Maybe your child has always had to work harder than their classmates. Perhaps homework ends in tears, reading takes far longer than it should, or math seems frustrating no matter how much they practise. Maybe teachers have raised concerns about attention, organization or learning. Or perhaps you’ve noticed your child seems exceptionally bright but isn’t reaching their potential.

You know something isn’t adding up… you just don’t know why.

At first, it’s easy to explain it away. They’ll catch up. They’re just distracted. They’re bored. They’re anxious. Every child learns differently.

But as the months or years pass, the questions become harder to ignore.

Why is reading still such a struggle? Why does writing take so much effort? Why are they falling behind in math despite trying so hard? Why do they seem so capable one moment and completely overwhelmed the next? Could this be ADHD? A learning disability? Giftedness? Anxiety? Or simply a learning style that needs different support?

Not having answers can leave families feeling frustrated and uncertain.

Our psychoeducational assessments provide a clear understanding of your child’s learning profile, cognitive strengths and areas of challenge. With practical recommendations, you’ll have the information you need to advocate for the right supports, school accommodations and strategies to help your child succeed with confidence.

DOES THIS SOUND FAMILIAR?

Your child avoids reading, guesses at unfamiliar words, reads slowly or struggles to understand what they’ve just read. Homework that involves reading takes much longer than expected.

They have great ideas but can’t seem to get them onto paper. Spelling, handwriting, grammar or organizing their thoughts makes written assignments exhausting and frustrating.

Even with practice, basic math concepts remain difficult. Memorizing facts, solving multi-step problems, or understanding new concepts feels much harder than it should.

Assignments are forgotten, instructions are missed and staying on task is difficult. Teachers describe your child as distracted, disorganized, or capable but inconsistent.

You know your child is intelligent, but their grades, effort or confidence don’t match what you see at home. They may become frustrated, avoid challenging work, or say they’re “just not smart.

You’ve asked yourself whether ADHD, a learning disability, giftedness, anxiety, or another learning difference could explain what you’re seeing. You want clear answers instead of continuing to guess.

A psychoeducational assessment can help identify how your child learns best, clarify the reasons behind their challenges, and provide recommendations for school accommodations, individualized supports, and practical strategies that make a meaningful difference.

You Or Your Loved One Deserve More Than A Diagnosis…

When you’ve spent months (or even years) wondering what’s going on, for yourself or a loved one, you deserve more than a list of scores and clinical jargon. You deserve answers that make sense in the context of your life.

At Beaches Therapy Group, we know that what you’re experiencing is connected to your health, relationships, work, family, history and life experiences. That’s why we begin with curiosity, never assumptions.

Before there is testing, there is your story.

We take the time to understand not only what you’ve been experiencing or noticing in a child, partner, or loved one, but how it shows up in everyday life.  As we connect the dots, patterns begin to emerge and experiences that once felt confusing start to make sense.

Our role isn’t simply to tell you what’s happening. It’s to help you make sense of your experience, recognize your strengths and understand what steps will help you move forward.

The greatest relief isn’t receiving a diagnosis; it’s finally understanding yourself or your loved one. And from there, things start to feel more manageable again.

What You'll Walk Away With

Understanding that turns into action.

A psychoeducational assessment provides far more than a diagnosis—it gives families, educators and students a practical plan for success.

You’ll receive:

  • A comprehensive psychoeducational assessment report
  • A detailed explanation of your child's cognitive, academic and learning profile
  • Identification of learning disabilities, ADHD, giftedness or other learning differences where appropriate
  • Personalized recommendations for home, school and future learning
  • Practical strategies to support learning and confidence
  • A feedback meeting to review results and discuss next steps
  • Documentation that can support school accommodations, Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and funding applications where applicable

Our goal is to help your child understand how they learn best—not simply identify where they’re struggling.

FAQs

A Psychoeducational Assessment may be helpful if your child is bright and capable but continues to struggle at school despite their effort. You may have noticed challenges with reading, writing, math, attention, organization, memory, or emotional regulation. Perhaps homework takes hours, your child is losing confidence, or teachers have expressed concerns.

An assessment helps uncover why these challenges are happening so you can make informed decisions about the right supports moving forward.

A Psychoeducational Assessment is a comprehensive evaluation that looks at how your child learns, thinks, processes information, and performs academically.

Rather than focusing on grades alone, it explores the cognitive, academic, and emotional factors that may be impacting learning. The goal is to provide a clear understanding of your child’s unique strengths, challenges, and learning profile so they can receive the support they need to thrive.

Every child is different, but a Psychoeducational Assessment may help identify:

  • Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
  • Learning Disabilities (such as Dyslexia, Dysgraphia, or Dyscalculia)
  • Giftedness
  • Executive functioning challenges
  • Processing speed differences
  • Working memory challenges
  • Cognitive strengths and learning style
  • Academic skill gaps
  • Factors contributing to school-related frustration or underachievement

Your psychologist will explain the results in detail and help you understand what they mean for your child.

The assessment process is designed to be supportive, engaging, and individualized.

It typically includes:

  • A parent intake interview to understand your child’s history and current concerns.
  • Standardized testing completed over one or more sessions with your child.
  • Questionnaires completed by parents and teachers (when appropriate).
  • Careful scoring, interpretation, and analysis by your psychologist.
  • A feedback meeting where results are reviewed and explained.
  • A comprehensive written report with personalized recommendations.

Throughout the process, you’ll know exactly what to expect.

The assessment is completed over several stages, including the parent interview, testing sessions, analysis, and a feedback appointment.

The number of testing sessions varies depending on your child’s age and individual needs. During your consultation, we’ll outline the expected timeline and answer any questions you may have.

No.

There is no studying or preparation required because there are no “right” or “wrong” answers. We simply want to understand how your child naturally thinks, learns, solves problems, and processes information.

The best preparation is making sure your child gets a good night’s sleep, eats beforehand, and arrives feeling comfortable.

Most children are pleasantly surprised by the experience.

Our psychologists work hard to create a warm, encouraging environment where children feel comfortable being themselves. Many of the activities feel like puzzles, games, or problem-solving exercises rather than traditional school tests.

There is no passing or failing—our goal is simply to understand how your child learns best.

With your consent, we may ask your child’s teacher to complete questionnaires that provide valuable insight into how your child functions in the classroom.

Combining information from both home and school helps us develop a more complete understanding of your child’s learning profile.

You’ll receive a detailed written report outlining:

  • Your child’s cognitive strengths
  • Areas of challenge
  • Academic performance
  • Any diagnoses, where appropriate
  • Practical recommendations for home and school
  • Recommendations for accommodations or interventions

You’ll also meet with your psychologist to review the findings, ask questions, and discuss next steps.

Yes.

If appropriate, the report may support requests for accommodations through your child’s school, including an Individual Education Plan (IEP), classroom supports, or other educational accommodations.

Your psychologist will explain any recommendations specific to your child’s needs.

Receiving answers is only the beginning.

After reviewing the results with your psychologist, you’ll have a clearer understanding of your child’s learning profile and practical recommendations for supporting them at home and at school.

Depending on the findings, next steps may include school accommodations, learning supports, therapy, tutoring, or other specialized services. Our goal is to ensure you leave with not just answers, but a plan.

Many extended health benefit plans provide coverage for services delivered by a Registered Psychologist, although reimbursement amounts vary.

We recommend checking with your insurance provider before your appointment to confirm your specific coverage. Our administrative team is happy to answer any questions about billing.

Sometimes grades don’t tell the whole story.

Many children work significantly harder than their peers to achieve similar results, experience high levels of anxiety around school, or rely on extensive support from parents at home. Others may be masking challenges that become more noticeable as academic demands increase.

A Psychoeducational Assessment can identify strengths and areas of need early, allowing families to put the right supports in place before small challenges become bigger ones.

Absolutely. Many families contact us because they know something doesn’t feel quite right—but they aren’t sure whether a Psychoeducational Assessment is the right next step.

Our Care Coordination Team will take the time to understand your concerns, answer your questions, and help determine whether a Psychoeducational Assessment is the best fit for your child. If it isn’t, we’ll point you toward the service that is.

Book an Assessment Consultation to speak with a member of our team. We’re here to help you find clarity with confidence.

This final section often performs well because it addresses the biggest barrier to booking: uncertainty. Instead of asking parents to decide on their own, it reassures them that someone will guide them through the decision.
